08 June 2023

Jakarta, June 8, 2023 - In commemoration of World Environment Day which falls on June 5, Super Indo together with PT Waste Hubs Indonesia launched an integrated Plastic Packaging Waste Collection Point or called Smart Waste Hub (WAHU). This point is a public service facility to encourage changes in people's behavior in utilizing plastic packaging waste that often ends up in landfills and the sea. This digital-based program through the WAHU application provides attractive incentives for active participants who sort, collect and exchange plastic packaging waste in the form of electronic money through digital wallets.

Based on data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), the volume of waste generation in Indonesia throughout 2022 is 68.5 million tons of national waste and 64 percent of waste generation has been successfully managed. Meanwhile, plastic waste itself is in second place, reaching 19.25 million tons or a proportion of 18% of the total national waste.

Ujang Solihin Sidik, Head of Sub-Directorate of Producer Management, Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, fully supports the Plastic Packaging Waste Collection facility initiated by Super Indo and PT Waste Hubs Indonesia. Ujang said, "We strongly support and appreciate the steps taken by Super Indo and PT Waste Hubs Indonesia in an effort to reduce plastic waste by building a plastic waste collection and processing facility. In the context of World Environment Day, this program can be said to be in line with international commitments in fighting plastic pollution. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is launching a "Plastic Pollution Resolution" which specifically addresses the issue of tackling plastic pollution in a full cycle, starting from its source until when it ends up in the sea. This is an alternative solution that can be taken to solve the plastic problem from its cycle. This includes designing products and materials that can be recycled and reused, to encouraging collaboration to facilitate equal access to technology, human resource capacity building, and technical and scientific cooperation."

Boudewijn Van Nieuwenhuijzen, President Director, Super Indo said, "We all know that plastic is a valuable material that is essential for safe and efficient product distribution and has a lower carbon footprint than many alternatives. But today, a lot of plastic waste ends up in the environment without proper management. Super Indo is committed to assisting the Government in managing plastic waste, and reducing the use of virgin plastic. Since 2006, we have invested in many educational programs to help Super Indo customers and stakeholders better understand behaviors in the plastic system, and change our approach to waste disposal. And today in commemoration of World Environment Day, I'm pleased to introduce our Smart Waste Hub facility or Packaged Plastic Waste Collection Points, which we built to optimize our scale and integration in improving plastic waste collection so as to help address Indonesia's growing waste problem."

Michiel Reinoud, Founder of WAHU said "With the 3R plastic waste management system at WAHU facilities, we want to make a sustainable positive impact on humanity and the planet. The main mission of our collaboration program with Super Indo is to collect and recycle as much plastic packaging waste in Indonesia as possible, thereby reducing plastic waste that could end up in landfill, polluting the land and sea. The idea is simple yet highly innovative and everyone can benefit by downloading our app, then start collecting plastic packaging waste, and enjoy bonuses in the form of electronic money."

Meanwhile, Yuvlinda Susanta, General Manager of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, Super Indo said, "We believe that plastic packaging waste has value if managed properly. Therefore, we invite you to join us, with the simple habit of cutting our plastic footprint, every day. In relation to this project, we conducted a pilot last month and received a positive response from our customers and the neighborhood. These Plastic Packaging Waste Collection Points have been placed in 2 Super Indo stores in Tangerang City and Bekasi City, supported by a digital application for good documentation and ease of payment via e-wallet. The facility is capable of processing more than 100 tons of plastic waste per month, supporting a circular economy through single-use plastic packaging and helping to divert plastic waste currently sent to landfills."

Furthermore, Christine Halim, Chairperson of the Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI) explained, "We from ADUPI are very supportive of this Plastic Packaging Waste Collection Points program, a collaboration between Super Indo and WAHU. We in the organization certainly need raw materials from plastic recycling where later the raw materials can be reused by the industry, so that the circular economy concept runs well. Therefore, it is important for all of us to collaborate well."

Roy N Mandey, Chairman of the Indonesian Retailers Association (APRINDO) added "Currently, the issue of climate change has become a frequent discussion in international forums. If we talk about climate change, it is closely related to plastic waste. APRINDO and its members have been trying to reduce plastic waste, especially single-use plastic shopping bags. What Super Indo and WAHU are doing through this project is a good step to implement the 3R principle, Reduce, Reuse, Recyle. APRINDO certainly appreciates and strongly supports this program for the good of the earth and future generations."

Any household plastic packaging brought to the WAHU Facility will be valued based on its category. The plastic categories are as follows: mixed plastic waste will be valued at two thousand five hundred rupiah per kilogram, certain PET plastic bottle waste will be valued at four thousand five hundred rupiah per kilogram, and Super Indo Private Label plastic waste will be valued at five thousand rupiah per kilogram.

WAHU facilities were built in two Super Indo outlets, namely Super Indo Pinang - Tangerang City and Super Indo Wibawa Mukti - Bekasi City. In the future, Super Indo will add the WAHU facility to other cities in Central Java and East Java.

By giving value to single-use plastic packaging, it is hoped that everyone will think twice about throwing away plastic packaging that will end up in landfill. In addition to helping reduce plastic pollution, the program also encourages a circular economy. "The issue of waste is a serious and multidimensional problem, so it requires continuous awareness of the waste problem. In this good moment, we invite all parties to collaborate to create a better environment for Indonesia," Yuvlinda concluded.
