29 February 2024

Commemorating the 2024 National Waste Awareness Day by increasing Zero Waste to Landfill efforts, Super Indo officially introduced the Waste-Friendly Supermarket concept in Bandung, as well as launching a digital-based Smart Waste Hub plastic packaging waste collection point, in collaboration with Waste Hubs Indonesia and multinational FMCG company Procter & Gamble (P&G) Indonesia. With the Waste Friendly concept, the supermarket that has been serving Bandung residents since 1997 is able to handle all of its operational waste with an optimal reduce, reuse, recycle approach. This effort is part of Super Indo's commitment to run a sustainable retail business with a focus on waste management and handling (Zero Waste) with a circular economy approach, as well as educating the public to change their waste disposal habits that have a negative impact on the environment.

Based on BPS Bandung City 2023 data, the amount of waste production in Bandung City reached 1,594.18 tons per day in 2022. The first place is food waste production in Bandung City, which reaches 709.73 tons per day or 44.52 percent of the total daily waste produced. The second place is plastic waste, reaching 266.23 tons per day or 16.70 percent. Then, in third place is paper waste. This type of paper waste reaches 209.16 tons per day or 13.98 percent of the total daily waste production in Bandung. Boudewijn van Nieuwenhuijzen, President Director of Super Indo said, "As we all know, National Waste Awareness Day is commemorated to remind us that everyone has a role in protecting the environment by managing waste through simple steps, namely Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R). As an implementation of Super Indo's big umbrella Sustainability program "ZeroToLandfill", we are now proud to introduce the Waste Friendly Supermarket program where Bandung City is the pilot project before being implemented nationally. By investing in this program, we want to build a strong foundation for transitioning to a more environmentally friendly future and prove that we as a business are highly committed to supporting programs to achieve sustainable waste management through the implementation of a circular economy."

Vinda Damayanti Ansjar, Director of Waste Reduction, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, said, "Every February 21, we commemorate the National Waste Awareness Day against the backdrop of the landslide at Leuwigajah landfill. Currently, the issue of plastic waste has become a global problem. So, it is not only Indonesia that faces the problem of plastic pollution, but also almost all countries. The government through KLHK invites and encourages business actors, especially producers, to be able to implement the concept of circular economy, both at the production stage, and post-consumer activities. So we appreciate Super Indo for making efforts to utilize almost all of its waste so that very little waste is sent to the landfill. We also thank Waste Hubs Indonesia, and P&G Indonesia for helping to provide WAHU plastic packaging waste collection points. We hope that the cooperative ecosystem implemented today can help other producers and retailers to emulate what Super Indo has done and can be applied to all other Super Indo outlets as a means of education."

The Acting Mayor of Bandung, Bambang Tirtoyuliono, revealed that "In this period of time, we in the city of Bandung are overshadowed by the problem of waste due to events at the Sarimukti landfill in 2023 which resulted in the accumulation of up to 41,000 tons of waste so that the accumulation of garbage that is not disposed of in the corner of Bandung is very disturbing to the community. To be able to overcome the waste problem, the Bandung City Government has created various waste management programs that are quite in line with what Super Indo is doing, namely the Kang PisMan Movement which stands for the words Reduce, Separate, and Utilize Waste. On behalf of the Bandung City Government, we appreciate Super Indo for initiating and making Bandung a Pilot City in the Waste Friendly Supermarket program."

Merlijn Lammesen, Co-founder of Waste Hubs Indonesia (WAHU) said, "we are proud to collaborate with Super Indo and P&G Indonesia in bringing WAHU Plastic Waste Collection Points in Bandung City. After we launched two facilities in Tangerang and Bekasi, we hope that this new facility in Bandung City can meet customer demand for more collection points and further pursue our ambition to create the leading, most transparent, and professional network of plastic waste collection centers in Indonesia by using fintech technology, namely the WAHU application. We are currently preparing to expand in several locations with Super Indo."

Jonn Terence Dy, Marketing Head and Sustainability Leader, P&G Indonesia said "For us at P&G, environmental sustainability is an integral part of doing business. We constantly focus on developing innovative programs and products that are not only of superior quality, but also sustainable for the environment. To achieve this mission, we also collaborate with many parties to address various complex environmental issues, including with one of our retail partners Super Indo, and WAHU. Through our collaboration with Super Indo since two years ago and support for this program, we hope to strengthen our joint efforts in protecting the environment, so that more consumers are involved in waste sorting and management programs, resulting in a greater positive impact on the environment. This is our concrete way of realizing P&G's mission as Force for Growth and Force for Good."

Meanwhile, Yuvlinda Susanta, General Manager of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, Super Indo revealed "Waste Friendly Supermarket is a sustainability initiative with two important aspects, namely conducting waste management with a 3R approach to 100% of the waste generated from operational activities so that it becomes zero to landfill, and carrying out public education to change waste disposal habits that have a negative impact on the environment. In this public education effort, Super Indo introduced Plastic Packaging Waste Collection Points in collaboration with Waste Hubs Indonesia, and supported by P&G Indonesia."

Super Indo's collaborative action with P&G Indonesia has been running since two years ago. It began with the Conscious Living program in the Bandung and Jakarta areas for Super Indo and P&G Indonesia customers and consumers. In this year's joint program with Waste Hubs Indonesia, the types of waste that can be collected include several types of plastic packaging for Super Indo 365 products and P&G Indonesia products (Pantene Shampoo, Head & Shoulders, Rejoice, Herbal Essences, and Downy Clothes Fragrance). People who have participated in this program and have met the requirements, can accumulate points in the WAHU application into e-wallet balances and Super Indo shopping vouchers.

"We believe that waste should not be seen as a source of environmental pollution that must be disposed of in landfills. This is one of the latest innovations and solutions in dealing with waste by involving the community, and last but not least, involving behavior change and public awareness." Yuvlinda concluded.
